How to truly immerse yourself in your Goals?
Well first let’s be honest. There might be some pain, maybe even a little bit (or a lot) of frustration involved.
Why pain and why frustration? Because usually our pain and frustration is not just an emotion we feel, when we want to get to our goal, but we feel it in some ways that even make us angry, and worry we aren't what we want to get to.
I love to write and work with clients who want to grow, who take personal growth seriously, but not so much themselves (meaning you can laugh at yourself). When I write this blog I always like to keep these pillars in mind (or as I like to say, the four burners on the stove top) ...Our health, personal finance, business/career and dating and relationship lives.
Our goals and our frustrations usually involve one of those four areas; we want to get in great shape, go on that fun vacation, start that business or advance or change our career and date and be in relationships that are fun, loving, and fulfilling.
But back to that pain, and frustration we feel when we do think about one of these areas, why do we feel that pain or frustration? Simple, because we don’t have what we want right now, and even more frustrating, we aren’t taking the type of small and consistent action we want toward those goals.
Here’s the good news, if you get conscious or now are aware of that frustration, you can resist the urges, to do or not do the things that take you away from your goals. You can practice the small habits and behaviors instead that take you toward those goals and slowly that frustration reduces from a boil to a simmer (as you can see, I love cooking) and is replaced with a feeling of peace, ease and contentment.
Let’s keep it real, my goal is to write a blog post every day for 30 days, It can be a lot of pressure, but I do my best, to go slowly, take my time (such as the first draft being written by hand), and give you my best, not just as a therapist, but as a coach, especially if you value personal growth.
With that goal comes a plan, a handwritten draft, a draft on a google doc, one proofread, copy and pasting it on to my website, and an email behind it. What’s behind me truly immersing myself in my blog post goal? It’s simple actions, but also a slow and calmness I have to feel when I do it, besides, what’s the rush?
You can go slow and calmly with your simple actions toward your goals!
So what would happen if you truly immersed yourself in your goals? Would you put pen to paper with an idea you have? Would you hop on the stairmasters for an extra 30 minutes? Would you go out by yourself for an hour, talk to a few girls (“You’re cute, what’s your name)?
Chances are if you were to truly immerse yourself in your goals, you would do one of these things, or something similar, and in a simple, and repeatable way. You might have to resist the urges to not do that simple action, and fight through that feeling of not feeling like doing it. But if you are immersed in it, those actions are easier to resist.
As a therapist, and a coach, I want you to reach your goals, all of them. Whether it is in dating, your relationship, getting in great shape, or even starting a business. I want you to truly reach all of them and grow.
Here is the cool thing, I don’t want you in my office for all of those things. Why? It’s my six month rule. I truly believe, if you can work through one challenge in your life, you can use those simple tools, and actions to move you toward your other goals.
